Balcony Garden at YorkU

As students from York University, we wanted to find sustainable ways to grow organic produce. The balcony garden is where UFI originally started, and we wanted to introduce sustainable farming even in small spaces.

We grew vegetables and herbs in containers that were donated to us from Tim Hortons and Booster Juice. We expanded each year to grow more produce and we brought in fabric containers. The fabric containers held more moisture than the plastic containers and yield more produce.

Our Gardens

Rexlington Community Garden (Etobicoke)

The community garden is at Rexlington Park (30 Bergamot Ave, Etobicoke, ON M9W 1V9), where we have partnered with the City of Toronto. The community garden is approximately ~5000 square feet. This community garden is designed to grow edible crops for the community members and local food banks.

Early 2022. Initial phase of the garden, the fence has been put up. The land has yet to be tilled.

Garden in operation. The city has installed us garden beds and our members and the volunteers have filled the garden with mulch, soil, plants, and other upgrades.

Unionville Alliance Church Garden (Markham)

In late 2022, we began working with the Unionville Alliance Church in Markham to construct a community garden. It started as a pilot plot of 5~6 garden beds, but with yearly expansion, as of 2025, it is now our largest garden, surpassing Rexlington Garden in both size and production.

Green Hills Community Garden (Richmond Hill)

In 2025, we began constructing our 3rd garden with the help of the city of Richmond Hill. Located in Harrington Park (Devonsleigh Blvd, Richmond Hill, ON L4S 1G8) in the neighbourhood behind Richmond Hill High School, it is surrounded by a peaceful and friendly community. We plan to experiment various different growing methods in this garden and hope that this garden becomes a beautiful addition to the community.

Greenhouse

The greenhouse was built in 2021 and was fully utilized this year to grow all of our seedlings. We germinated the seedlings indoor and then moved them into the greenhouse. We grow seedling from the community garden but also partnerships we created with other organizations that have garden spaces and are need of seedlings.
